Did China snub the US?

US President Barack Obama had the best response after his unexpectedly awkward arrival at the G20 summit in China. Pope Francis declared Mother Teresa a saint. And as Bill Cosby goes to court this week, we look into how the sexual assault allegations against him are changing US laws.

HERE ARE THE TOP STORIES

G20: The US and China’s ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement, an awkward entrance for Obama, and Theresa May on Brexit.

  • China and the US — which together contribute one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions — ratified the global climate agreement that was hammered out in France last year. The agreement aims to change the way the world uses fossil fuels, and curb the release of greenhouse gases, but will only be enacted when 55 nations — representing 55% of worldwide emissions — all sign up.
  • US President Barack Obama arrived in Hangzhou, China, but was forced to leave Air Force One through a little-used smaller exit usually reserved for landings in dangerous territories — such as Afghanistan. In what one China expert said was a “deliberate” snub, Chinese officials quite literally forgot to roll out the red carpet, leaving the US team to improvise. Speaking after the incident, Obama said the size of the US delegation could be “a little overwhelming.”
  • Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to keep looking for a path to provide humanitarian relief to thousands of besieged civilians in Syria, the Associated Press reports.
  • UK Prime Minister Theresa May, speaking in China, has questioned the feasibility of a points-based system for controlling immigration into the UK, one of the key promises of Leave campaigners during the EU referendum, BBC News reports.

US Election: Donald Trump told a black church in Detroit that the US needs a “new civil rights agenda.”

The Republican presidential nominee said it must prioritize the rights to education, to employment, and to “live in safety and in peace.” Outside, protesters waited: “Trump is insulting, racist, and does not represent Detroit,” said one.

A taco truck parked outside Trump’s event on Saturday did brisk business while bringing to life everyone’s current favorite political hashtag, #TacoTrucksOnEveryCorner.

And a little extra.

The latest in the unusually transparent aftermath of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of personal email and handling of classified information while she was Secretary of State: She used potentially as many as 13 different Blackberrys to send email from her personal account — and sometimes misplaced them — according to FBI records released on Friday.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS?

Here’s how sexual assault laws are changing in the US after the Bill Cosby allegations.

When women began to come forward with rape allegations against Bill Cosby — sometimes decades after the alleged crimes took place — they sparked a national conversation about statutes of limitation and sexual assault.

Cosby will likely face a crucial pretrial battle on Tuesday in the sex assault case brought by Andrea Constand, experts say. Will testimony from his other accusers be allowed in?

Experts say the odds of Cosby winning drop significantly if testimony from other women who have accused him of sexual assault is allowed to be heard, but that — despite an uphill legal battle — Cosby’s defense team may be able to build a strong case for an appeal.
