A secretive global legal system gives corporations leverage over the countries where they operate. Everyone said the US didn’t have anything to worry about, because American laws are fair to begin with. Everyone was wrong. Donald Trump said there’d be “no amnesty” in a hard-line immigration speech. And orange juice is in crisis! But why?
HERE ARE THE TOP STORIES
The US helped create a secretive global court to protect companies investing in developing countries. Now the court could come back to bite America.
It has extraordinary power, enabling international corporations to force countries to fork over billions of dollars or even to rewrite their laws.
Everyone said it couldn’t happen to the US, though, because American laws already treat corporations fairly. Turns out that couldn’t have been more short-sighted. If the US hasn’t gotten burnt yet, it’s largely because of sheer luck.
The final installment in this BuzzFeed News investigation is a crazy tale about a showdown between two Mississippi funeral homes and shows just how close we’ve come.
Orange juice is in crisis! Americans are drinking less and less of it. But why?
One reason for the OJ exodus: Research now shows more people focus on sugar than fat or calories when reading nutrition labels, and are more likely to cut sugar from their diets than fat. An 8-ounce glass of Minute Maid’s 100% orange juice contains 24 grams of sugar — more than a serving of some brands of vanilla ice cream.
In the 12 months to July, sales of refrigerated orange juice have dropped 4.1% according to data from Nielsen, and it’s gradually disappearing from store shelves. The last time the US saw a rise in OJ sales was during the 2000–2001 growing season.
QUICK THINGS TO KNOW
Impeached: Brazil’s senate has voted to remove Dilma Rousseff as president over a months-long corruption scandal.
Anthony Weiner: Child welfare workers have reportedly launched an investigation into the former New York congressman, days after he and his wife separated following another sexting scandal. The New York Post published a photograph that Weiner purportedly sent a woman showing him shirtless in bed next to his young son.
On screen: White Girl, ostensibly the story of a college girl who moves to Queens for the cheap rent, hooks up with a Puerto Rican drug dealer, and ruins his life, offers a trenchant critique of white female privilege. And Stranger Things is coming back for a second season on Netflix. Here’s the new trailer.
