An earthquake rocked central Italy, collapsing homes and killing at least 37 people. Muslim women are being fined and forced to remove their modest swimwear by French police officers, video footage has shown. And participants in a dumb and racist protest caused a panic in Prague by staging a fake ISIS attack.

HERE ARE THE TOP STORIES

At least 37 people died and 150 people are missing after a large earthquake struck central Italy.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck just after 3:30 a.m. local time about 6 miles from the small town of Norcia, according to the US Geological Survey. The two hardest-hit towns were Amatrice and Accumoli, about 80 miles northeast of Rome.

Sergio Pirozzi, the mayor of Amatrice, said the quake left people buried under debris and the “town isn’t here anymore."

Wednesday’s earthquake happened in the same region where another struck in April 2009, killing roughly 300 people.

Rescue workers begun digging people free of the rubble first thing Wednesday.

WE'RE KEEPING AN EYE ON

Muslim women are being fined and forced to remove their modest swimwear by French police officers, video footage has shown.

A handful of mayors of beach towns in France in the last few weeks have banned the “burkini” — a form of swimwear popular with Muslim women that consists of a two-piece garment made of a hooded tunic and trousers — saying it’s “beachwear which ostentatiously displays religious affiliation.” Yet women who design and make the modest swimwear said it “liberated” women.

We spoke to a Muslim British woman who makes burkinis.

Designer Kausar Sacranie, who is from London, has been inundated with requests in the last few days — from media, from major retailers, and customers — all inquiring about the burkini. “The surf outfit is exactly the same, but is just missing a hood. But if you were to wear a cap with a swimsuit it’s the same,” Sacranie told BuzzFeed News.

Here’s how Muslim women style their hijab-friendly beachwear. And here are 15 Instagrammers who look flawless in their modest swimwear.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS?

An 18-year-old student athlete accused of rape and sexual assault got probation so he can attend college.

David Becker, a Massachusetts student, was accused of assaulting two of his high school classmates while they were unconscious after drinking at a house party in April.

He’ll avoid jail time, a criminal record, and the sex offender registry if he meets the terms of his probation for two years.

“He can now look forward to a productive life without being burdened with the stigma of having to register as a sex offender,” Becker’s attorney, Thomas Rooke, told the court.
